Inspiration

Karula, Queen of the northern Sabi Sands. This leopardess was one of the most successful females, in living memory, to have roamed the Sabi Sands, an area known for its leopards. She raised 10 cubs to independence and many of her descendants are still roaming the magical bushveld to this day. It is only fitting that one of the three exclusive houses on the private Cheetah Plains reserve be named after this legend.

This piece was a commission to pay homage to the queen herself and now graces the walls of the Karula house in the beautiful Cheetah Plains. Perched in the fork of an old tree the queen surveys her kingdom, which she dominated for many years. In this piece, I have tried to capture the grace and royalty of this wonderful cat, with her gaze off into the distance evoking the idea of mystery, so often associated with this enigmatic species.

Although the original now proudly graces the walls of the Karula House at Cheetah Plains, a limited run of 150 prints are available. As with all my works, 30% of the profits of each print will go to Africa Parks to fund vital conservation work across the continent.
